Dark Blue 4K 2002

“Dark Blue” is a representative of the currently popular genre of “thrillers about police corruption.” Every year, several similar films are released, featuring different actors but essentially the same plot and settings. At the center is always a “seasoned cop” who has spent a lot of time on the streets of his hometown and understands how things work there. Specifically, he knows who to extort bribes from and who to bribe in order to climb the ranks or, ultimately, save up for a mansion in some quiet place, far away from the chaotic metropolises. And there’s always a young rookie assigned to assist the seasoned law enforcement officer. That’s exactly how it works here, too.

To be honest, Kurt Russell doesn’t really fit the role of a corrupt cop and scoundrel who takes bribes and frames his detainees. Denzel Washington looked far more convincing and tough in the similar film “Training Day.” Just in terms of appearance. But in “Dark Blue,” aside from the conflicted protagonist, there’s another key element: the corrupt Chief Van Meter is about to be replaced by the African American Holland, played by the excellent actor Wing Rames. The theme of the African American uprising is almost at the forefront of the film. On the other hand, Holland embodies integrity and incorruptibility, and once he comes to power, he might be able to change things for the better.

Unfortunately, there’s very little action in “Dark Blue,” and even the memorable dialogues between Russell and the little-known Speedman don’t really sustain the necessary momentum. The result is a rather gloomy crime drama about corrupt cops who ultimately find the strength to remember why they joined the police force in the first place. Thanks to the excellent cast, the film is quite interesting to watch—as long as you don’t compare it to other films in this genre. There’s an unusual atmosphere of chaos engulfing the streets of Los Angeles, along with a sense of general hopelessness. It feels as though everything is completely hopeless. But there are still just a couple of people who can make a difference.

The title “Dark Blue” seems to speak for itself—the film is quite gloomy and dreary, but thanks to the excellent cast, it’s worth watching at least once.
