This picture was watched in childhood, then it seemed to me incomprehensible and scary from the abundance of various monsters. Revisiting it recently I did not feel horror, rather I felt sadness and some pity for the humanity we represent.
Midian is a utopia for outcasts, outcasts and just the dregs of our society. And Boone, a young boy suffering from remorse for sins he did not commit, seeks this mythical city to escape from the world that has rejected him.
The monsters evoke sympathy rather than fear, and the people - on the contrary, disgust. Cronenberg perfectly played a psychotic doctor with a manic passion not only to kill, but also to destroy the whole Night Tribe (that was the name under which I watched this film as a child).
Clive Barker, as said before, in his repertoire, created a fantastic-mystical alternative reality, with a huge admixture of social drama.
Only fans of the genre and Barker in general can judge the movie through an objective lens.
