It is challenging to overestimate the popularity of Minecraft. It has been one of the flagships of the entertainment industry for over 14 years, and I see no reason for that to change anytime soon. It is not surprising that Hollywood was eager to adapt this story for the screen, and finally, the long-awaited “A Minecraft Movie” has arrived. Of course, the story is quite simple, but that doesn't mean it turned out badly.
There are several important characters in the film, each of whom is a key link in the story. Let's start with Steve, who was always looking for something unusual in the world and managed to find it. Dreaming of entering an old mine and seeing what it hides, Steve managed to get there and found a portal to another dimension. Here, everything is square, and you can create various buildings and other structures from virtually nothing. Of course, Steve found his home here and is in no hurry to return. But he didn't know that beyond this world there is another one that is much more dangerous...
Meanwhile, while Steve explores other realities, Garrett “Trashman” Garrison, a former world gaming champion who is now unwanted by anyone, continues to collect trouble on our Earth. He is in debt and has no prospects in life. He is, of course, a big guy, but even a child could deal with him without much trouble. The most interesting part of the story begins when Garrett unexpectedly befriends a schoolboy named Henry, and together they unexpectedly travel to the world that Steve once discovered. There, it's easy to get into even more trouble, even if you're not looking for it. Garrett is a master at this.
The film has a very simple plot, but I understand why the authors decided to take this step. The fact is that fans alone cannot make a film a box office success, and it was important that A Minecraft Movie was also seen by ordinary viewers who would only begin to discover this fictional film for themselves once they arrived at the cinema. At the same time, the plot contains many different “Easter eggs” and “references” that are aimed at a knowledgeable audience. In my opinion, there is a very good balance between the specifics of the game and a simple entertainment film.
Of the characters, Steve and Garrett are the ones I remember most. They were played by Jack Black and Jason Momoa. But while Black is already accustomed to playing the role of a comical joker who often does silly things, Momoa decided to radically change his usual image and portrayed his character, Garrett, as an outspoken jester. And you know, there's something special about that. Despite all his brutality, humor suits Momoa very well, and I think he should appear in movies like this much more often.
“A Minecraft Movie” became one of the biggest box office hits when it was released. Of course, critics did not rate Jared Hess's film very highly, but the majority of viewers liked it. And I am among them.
