Back in 1999, M. Night Shyamalan directed The Sixth Sense, which even received an Oscar nomination, and everyone proclaimed the director a talent, the king of final twists, and a true genius in general.
Many years have passed since then, and Shyamalan's piggy bank has accumulated a mix of films with an average score of about 6 points, and some of them were awarded Golden Raspberry.
But strangely enough, we still somehow still watch every new Shyamalan movie with interest. Although it would seem that “Knock on Cabin” should have been the last straw by now, but here comes “Trap” with a tantalizing description and an even more tantalizing actor in the lead role.
Josh Hartnett is a rising star of the early 2000s and one of the main contenders for Nolan's Batman, and how do you know how his career would have turned out if he had accepted the offer from the big-name director.
But in 2024, the actor accepted Shyamalan's offer and this is what came out of it.
I won't spoil any spoilers, although the most interesting spoiler, in my opinion, is shown in the trailer for some reason. Let's say. So - the director held something back for the audience for dessert. And he held back - stupidity of absolutely all characters, naivety of plot moves and cardboard characters.
I'm not even exaggerating about the naiveté. It turns out that in our world you can tell secret information to a complete stranger, and world stars of Taylor Swift level are so accessible that you can practically become friends with them. All you have to do is smile and ask. Seriously.
And an operation as massive and serious as catching a serial killer at a concert looks like child's play.
I don't know what to praise this movie for. Probably for Josh Hartnett, because he really tried and worked 100% on all his close-ups.
So what do we have in the dry balance? For a thriller it lacked tension, for a drama it lacked a well-developed character story. It was a good idea. And we fell into that trap when we saw the movie.
