One of the brightest and most iconic American movie masterpieces of the 80s, which became the culmination and the most talented picture in a long line of films on the theme of 'man becoming a woman'. Of course, 'Tootsie' is far from the first and not the only film of this kind - there are in this category of films and certain successes, such as 'Only Girls in Jazz' or 'Mrs. Doubtfire', but probably forever decided that the glorious victory pennant among all these glorious comedies will be carried by Dorothy Michaels - the charming 'Tootsie' - the great Dustin Hoffman!
We can talk a lot about this actor, about his versatile talent and the brightest movie roles, but 'Tootsie' and only 'Tootsie' became a full-fledged benefit of this actor, it was here that he revealed the vast facets of his talent, created a memorable WOMAN image, became a male actor who almost got an Oscar for Best Actor! This is not a compliment to a good actor - Hoffman is really great here, brilliant. He not only showed the wonders of physical reincarnation, but also comprehended the female soul, created a female character, because it is not a pale monkeying female gait or parodying - no, this is a real woman, in some moments of the movie just stop believing that the audience in front of the actor who played in 'Midnight Cowboy' and 'Kramer vs. Kramer'! It's just a pity that Hoffman was not given to play all the characters in the movie, I'm sure that he would have coped with this task perfectly. So amazingly woman no one else played!
However, it's hard to talk about one Hoffman, when Pollack recruited in his picture a whole group of the best American actors - charming Jessica Lange, funny Charles Durning, hilarious 'Captain Lassard' George Gaines, the great Bill Murray, whose role is all the more valuable that the whole is pure improvisation! Even the beautiful Geena Davis shone in this truly 'star' picture!
Of course, Sydney Pollack made the picture ambiguous, and otherwise could not be, especially since the main script was written by Barry Levinson, and whether he did not create a dozen masterpieces, in which through the comedy shine through the no-nonsense passions, through the laughter tears, and easy and casual laughter turns into a sarcastic smirk, fearlessly stalking the vices of modern society - unemployment, bureaucracy, sycophancy, humiliation of human dignity.
However, the movie is above all a comedy - kind, sweet, a little sentimental. One of those that remain forever in the memory and in the heart. It is one of the best American movies - combining all the ingredients that make cinema an art!
