Produced by Martin Scorsese himself, this brilliant crime drama by Stephen Frears is not only an excellent adaptation of Jim Thompson's novel of the same name, but also one of the best films about con artists ever made. Without pretending to some deep thoughts or hidden metaphors, the picture, nevertheless, very authentically and as hard as possible depicts the world of small swindlers, and after the final credits even somehow do not want to follow their example.
Stylistically “The Grifters” is calibrated to the millimeter, starting literally from the first minutes, when the screen will split into three halves and all three main characters will appear in the frame in turn, and up to the finale, the picture will leave no doubt in its technical perfection. It - it feels - as if it was filmed only yesterday and there were not these twenty years, except that Annette Bening during this time has managed to spread a little wider, and Angelica Huston to turn into an actress who performs purely secondary roles.
These two excellent in all respects women get the role of those still bitches who are not only rivals in life, but are able to cut the throat of anyone in pursuit of financial prosperity. The apple of discord in this case is a young and sutenersky sweet John Cusack, but if for Moira, played by Bening, he is just a guy - well: a partner - which by all means need to win back, the motives of rivalry heroine Houston, to put it mildly, covered in fog.
The relationship between Lilly and Roy is complex and interesting at the same time: it cannot be defined as purely familial and the mother is rather elementary jealous of her son than trying to help. She even hires a nurse in a critical situation with a purpose, expecting that her son will definitely take the young sister to his bed, thus cutting off any connection with Moira. Her jealousy is clearly of a vicious nature and is explained only by the age difference between mother and son, and the fact that there was once a sexual relationship between them is explicitly mentioned in the picture.
However, not everything there is mixed only on jealousy - not the least role in the rivalry, - I will not be afraid of this word two miger, - will play and green. And somehow it will be difficult to say so easily, who in this confrontation will be the winner, because that Lilly with her incredibly rich track record, that Moira, which although young, but damn smart and cunning, each has a chance to throw each other. Not to take advantage of it would be as sinful for a top-class con man as for a believer not to pray before going to bed.
