What did the actress Gloria Stuart, who played old Rose in Titanic, really look like in her youth? There was just so amazingly shown the seamless transition of Kate Winslet's eye with Gloria Stuart's eye that I thought they were matched in the role solely on looks, one to match the other. And to my great joy, Gloria Stuart in the '30s, when she was a star, played not only in various dramas-melodramas, which for general development is not very interesting to watch. And in horror movies. This is the genre I can watch any year. And for general development, and for aesthetic pleasure.

The main value of 'The Old Dark House' is, of course, Boris Karloff, but I was interested exclusively in Gloria Stuart. And she was shown in the very first shot. It's when the car was driving in a terrible downpour, wandering, not knowing where. And eventually she comes upon a house. Yeah, it's a scary house. But it wasn't just scary because of its gloomy appearance, but because of its strange inhabitants. The inhabitants were so strange that the Texas Chainsaw Massacre family was not far behind. And they were constantly having discussions about whether or not their house would be flooded by a flood.

The '30s, of course, were filmed by people like people too, with their own sense of humor and jokes. But I was still surprised that some of the characters openly ironized the situation. I naively thought that in those days, if a horror movie was being made, all the characters had to walk around and do nothing but get scared. But no, Roger, who was riding in the car with the Waverton couple, was singing some funeral songs about how they were all going to drown and get flooded. And, when they knocked on the doors of this mysterious house, he joked: “What if the owners are lying dead there?”.

In general, for the viewer of that time all the necessary atmosphere of horror was on the face of the earth: creepy close-up views of the butler Morgan (Boris Karloff), the storm that opens the shutters of the windows and almost pulls the curtains (and just amazingly blows the dress of the main character!). And I was very impressed by the mirror-distorted face of the old woman who owned the house. And spectacular was the shadow play that Margaret (Gloria Stuart) jokingly arranged, and that all the other characters did not jokingly arrange.

And what was mesmerizing about the plot was not only this strange family, or non-family, each member of which had their own quirks. But also, for example, the mysterious door, which was closed on all locks, and from which some human sounds were heard, and which the new arrivals had to open.

One of the most frightening passages is when Margaret, alone in the living room, sticks her head out into the rainy street and calls for help. And a “premium” huge hand took hold of the doorjamb and closed it. I would have given a lot in my life to watch this episode, being a contemporary of the movie.

There is no special music in the movie, but it is replaced by the howling of the wind throughout the movie, which is scarier than any intimidating music.

Gloria Stuart was not the only female character in the movie. There was also a brunette named Gladys. But she had what would now be called a “blonde” role. She was giggling and dancing all the time. While the quiet Margaret talked about what was going on around them. But surprisingly, it was Margaret who was stripped (modestly stripped down to her underwear, which didn't stop me from marveling at what I saw).

I'll say a little more about Gladys, I liked her line when she and Roger were sitting in the barn: “I feel like something bad is going to happen to us if we go back.” And the fact that she wasn't particularly good at playing love from the first hour to a man she barely knows.

And now for Gloria Stuart. And about Boris Karloff we can not even talk about it - peerlessness is peerlessness, a legend is a legend, a star is a star. But, amazingly enough, “Frankenstein” was made only a year before this movie, but they already included a mention of him and his performer in the producers' note for this movie.

It's amazing how people change with age, and how the movie industry itself changes. I would never have recognized the same old Rose Dawsen in this Margaret in the movie. She didn't really look like Kate Winslet, but rather looked more like Drew Barrymore. But I don't know what it is about Drew Barrymore's looks, but she looks like a lot of '30s actresses (and Zita Johann from 'The Mummy', and someone else in one of the 'Frankensteins'). But still, considering how many years have passed, it's just amazing how well Gloria Stuart has been preserved in 'Titanic' (given that she was purposely 'gelled' there). And as if on purpose, it was to her, Margaret, that the crazy old landlady of the house touched her “blasphemous” skin, and declared to her: “Nice soft skin, but it will wear out in time.”
