The movie is worthy of the story it is based on.
'Evilenko' lacks a bit of the artistry that would have been possible if the movie had been made by someone with a genius inside like Kubrick, striving to create a work of art rather than simply transferring the obituary of a hideous killer to the screen.
Chikatilo is not a great personality, but a great evil that only McDowell can masterfully and best portray. His eyes, are a real actor's 'plasticine' with which he can express unthinkably gruesome things, the deepest feelings. What in this movie is by far the best thing that soars above the ghastly realism of everyday life and that can be attributed to art, is Malcolm McDowell's acting. What color of feelings his characters evoke, suggests that, watching this game, you always forget that it is a game, a movie, Malcolm has his characters begin to live a separate, independent life from him. And that's brilliant.
As for the presence of the 'Russian spirit' in 'Evilenko', it is perhaps not the worst, but far from the best embodiment of 'Russian' by foreign directors.
'Evilenko' is not a masterpiece of cinematography, but it is another masterpiece of Malcolm's acting. And it is for this game, which perfectly reveals the personality of Chikatilo, that this movie is worth watching.
