Godzilla vs. Biollante 4K 1989

There is no doubt that Godzilla vs. Biollante is one of the most unique Godzilla movies ever made. What makes it different is that the other monster in the movie was created by humans through genetic engineering.

This is the main theme of the movie. The ethics of a scientist, how far you can go in the interest of science to not create a new Godzilla, a new bomb, or in this case Biolante, which is a female creature. Still, that's rare for a daikaiju. And when you add that Biolante is also a plant, nothing like it has ever been seen before.

In 1986, Toho Studios held a contest for the best script for the movie that would open a new chapter in the King of Monsters story. The winner of the contest was dentist Shinichiro Kobayashi, whose script was later finalized by Kazuki Omori. Omori, who has been a Godzilla fan since childhood, will also direct the next movie, Godzilla vs. King-Gyroda. He would then act as a screenwriter twice in the 1992 and 1995 films.

But back to this movie. It is Kobayase that we owe the appearance of Miki Sagusa (Megumi Odaka), a psychic girl who will be a recurring character in the rest of the films of the Heisei era. Odaka will soon leave not only the Godzilla films, but also the movie industry, said to be due to health problems.

Kobayashi's script originally called for the movie to feature the monster Deautalios, a fish and rat hybrid, which was replaced by Biolante, a hybrid of Godzilla, a rose, and human DNA. It has been heard that the script is somewhat reminiscent of the action of Gamera vs. Barugon from rival studio Daiei, but even if this is true, it is not very striking.

It was from this film that Koichi Kawakita became an indispensable figure, working on the other side of the camera in the Godzilla films until 1995. Kawakita was responsible for all sorts of special effects, weapons and destruction.

Composer Koichi Sugiyama inherited a huge legacy from Akira Ifukube, which he successfully utilized, but his own tune for Super X 2 is more reminiscent of the music from Star Trek.

This may come as a surprise to some, but the movie failed at the box office, and in Japan. It wasn't shown much in the world. In the U.S. and that complain that even the pirate version of this picture is impossible to get. The main reason for the failure was a new monster. It was not even about how bad or good he is, just the audience was too conservative, and no one knows Biolante did not attract attention.
