Robert Zemeckis is such a versatile director that he can make a strong movie in virtually any genre. He has already tried his hand at adventure fiction, heartwarming drama, thriller and many other cinematic offshoots, and decided that he should also focus on a complex family drama-detective with elements of mysticism. Taking a script by Clark Gregg, the same agent Phil Coulson from “The Avengers”, Zemeckis made one of his best films, namely “What Lies Beneath”.
The plot is set in a cozy lake house, where relatively recently moved a happy married couple, a successful scientist Norman Spencer and his wife Claire. Everything seems to be fine, but Claire is constantly bothered by her neighbors, also a married couple, who are not doing so well, and strange things start to happen in the house.
Claire feels that someone invisible has appeared near her and he wants to show her something. The woman herself will not understand what the ghost needs specifically from her. As for Spencer, he himself does not see anything strange and simply refuses to accept his wife's stories for the truth. Now it's up to us to figure out what's really going on here. Maybe Claire really feels something otherworldly, and suddenly she has a mental problem ... We'll find out the answers, but all in good time.
The director holds the story with a strong hand, he skillfully confuses us and tries not to reveal all the cards for the time being. We watch a real family idyll of already not old people, and then we see how their measured everyday life is replaced by something disturbing and strange. The credibility of the movie is given by the excellent performance of the actors, who look simply gorgeous here, and some of them even unexpectedly.
Gorgeous Michelle Pfeiffer plays a housewife who has nothing to do and it is not hard to realize that she can think of something extra. At the same time, she does not look crazy, and causes only sympathy. Harrison Ford, who played Priiffer's spouse, is tougher, but also a very interesting character who knows what to surprise us with.
Zemeckis's movie is worth to watch under any circumstances, because it is a real detective thriller and drama, which from the first minutes captures the attention and during the viewing you don't want to be distracted at all, not to miss anything important.
