The masterpiece of the famous Italian director Lucio Fulci, “The Beyond” was banned in many countries around the world, and cut by more than half in many. And only now, so many years after its creation (and the movie was filmed in 1981), we can finally see a full-fledged uncensored version of the classic.
The picture belongs to the thrash genre, which was at its peak of popularity in Italy just at that time. There are a lot of really scary moments in the movie, where you will find a lot of really bloody and shocking scenes.
The directing here is top notch. Fulci, as a classic of the genre, again demonstrates excellent visuals and stunning presentation of the material, which makes the movie a pleasure to watch.
The camerawork is truly superb. The camera focuses on the “meat” without looking away. Especially revealing is the moment in which it is shown how the doctor shoots a woman with a large-caliber gun. Such a blatantly filmed scene is still to be found, even in the thrash genre.
The performance of the actors is noticeably lame, but not all of them. David Warbeck, for example, noticeably overplayed, but it does not interfere with the perception of the picture.
The atmosphere of the movie is shown just flawlessly and really frightening. As well as monsters. Very pleased with the really complex makeup for such a cheap tape. So, the zombies were successful to the glory, and this despite the fact that they were played by drunks (literally), who have no acting data.
So, we have a thrash masterpiece in front of us! Now, so many years after the creation of the movie, it has forever entered the history of cinematography, as well as the name of the legendary director Lucio Fulci, who devoted his whole life to horror films!
