Just 15 years ago, the genre was completely buried and considered entertainment exclusively for enthusiasts. Due to the abundance of senseless violence, the dominance of 3D graphics, and the emphasis on clip editing in the 2000s, horror films turned into low-end popcorn cinema. As a fan of the genre, I am sincerely glad that attitudes toward these films have changed dramatically over the past 10 years. This is all thanks to creative people who began to focus on the ideas and madness happening on screen. One such person is Zach Craig.

In 2022, he made a name for himself among horror fans with the more niche film Barbarian. It was clear from the film that its creator came from comedy, like other horror directors in recent years. Barbarian skillfully juggled satire and suspense, keeping the viewer in the dark until the very end. Incidentally, it is in this film that all the creative ideas that Kreger carried over to Weapons are evident. An abundance of storylines and different points of view, shifting the focus of the plot to the side to keep the veil of mystery until the end, an emphasis on insignificant details that turn out to be the most important, and a crazy, crazy ending that will either delight or anger, but will definitely not leave you indifferent.

It is clear that Zach Craig is gradually honing his directorial style, because this film is definitely more complex than the previous one. There are both pros and cons to this. For example, as the plot unfolds, questions remain that the film never answers. Let's just say that the film competently reveals the central idea (which, by the way, is surprisingly rarely used in horror films) and introduces us to the characters through visual storytelling, but leaves a number of mysteries. If you don't like that, it's understandable. But personally, I love it when a film leaves room for thought and doesn't let you go even after the plot is complete. Again, such films stay with you for a long time.

In general, it's very difficult to talk about the film without spoilers; you just have to see it. Again, even the advertising campaign skillfully diverted attention from the main idea, which made what was happening even more intriguing. Despite the fact that there aren't that many screamers here (I counted 5, of which 2 really made me cringe in my seat), Weapons clearly succeeds in creating suspense. They are terrifying at the beginning, mysterious in the middle, and jaw-dropping at the end. Whatever you say, this is almost the perfect movie to watch in the theater, one that doesn't let you go for a moment.

In general, I repeat, I am glad that modern horror movies are becoming objects of experimentation. Jordan Peele, Robert Eggers, Oz Perkins, Michael Flanagan, Ty West, Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Danny and Michael Philippou, and now Zach Cregger. All these people have proven that horror is a place for creativity and innovation. It is in these films that the most inventive ideas can emerge, which can ultimately become a source of inspiration for future authors. Let's hope that Weapons is far from the last such victory and that other authors will also prove themselves in the future. I highly recommend watching the film itself. It is an unforgettable experience.
