Just three years ago, the world was shocked by the news about Edward Snowden, who leaked secret documents to journalists about the US intelligence services' total surveillance of its own citizens, citizens of other countries, including their leaders. I remember well how reports appeared in the news, where there was heated discussion about what was happening, and when the hunt for Snowden began and he fled around the world, it looked like a reality show. But this is not a reality show, it is the real life of a man who decided to reveal the truth to the world, fully aware of the consequences that would await him.
Personally, I was looking forward to the release of this film. Oliver Stone has once again taken on a very sensitive subject, as the whole surveillance story has cast the US intelligence services in a very unfavorable light.
I liked the film; it is a serious movie that touches on various aspects, whether political or social, but above all, it is a story about an ordinary person, his life, and his faith in his beliefs. Snowden is a film in which events flow smoothly from one to the next. There are no crazy chases or shootouts in the style of The Bourne Identity. This film is like a good story that you read with interest, turning the pages to the next one.
We see Snowden in a different light, we are told the story of his life over the course of nine years, how he sincerely wanted to serve his country, how he lost faith in what he was doing. It was interesting to observe how Snowden's attitude towards what was happening changed, his torments, doubts, fears, and realization that it was time to open other people's eyes to what was happening.
Of course, Joseph Gordon-Levitt gave a performance beyond praise, despite not looking all that similar to Snowden. His portrayal is the spitting image of Snowden, I am once again convinced of how talented Gordon-Levitt is as an actor. If last year he impressed me with his performance in the film “The Walk,” then I will definitely remember his current work on the character of Snowden.
Overall, the film has a strong cast. Shailene Woodley, Lindsay Mills, played Snowden's girlfriend, and her character always supports Edward despite all obstacles. Personally, I liked her character. The one who really surprised me was Nicolas Cage. I didn't recognize him at all, even though he has a small supporting role, it is memorable. It's been a long time since I've seen Cage in a decent movie. Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Rhys Ifans, Timothy Olyphant, each of them embellished the film with their performances. Personally, I liked the ending of the whole story; it turned out to be somewhat touching and emotionally gripping.
Overall, the film Snowden is a worthy adaptation of the story of a man who made one of the biggest revelations in history, who gave up his comfortable life for the sake of it, so that people would know what was going on and who was to blame.
