Dogma 4K (1999) is a film that surprises even those who know Kevin Smith well. It is not just a comedy with trademark jokes, but a bold, sometimes daring parable that plays with religious imagery so easily and confidently that you can't help but admire the author's audacity.
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are particularly good here: their duo of fallen angels is simultaneously funny, charming, and frighteningly convincing. The film deftly balances satire and serious themes, and the dialogue is so sparkling that it holds your attention from the first scene to the last.
In 4K, the film reveals itself even better — brighter, clearer, richer. Dogma remains one of those works from the late 90s that has not lost its edge today.
