This film made a strong impression on me. The first few minutes are confusing, when you realize that the entire film will take place on this set with chalk-drawn streets and imaginary houses. Then interest sets in, and the film begins to captivate you. The friendly voice of the narrator telling about the town's residents, the appearance of a beautiful stranger in godforsaken Dogville—the plot draws you in, and you completely forget that everything happening on the screen is nothing more than a performance. No special effects, no sets... And the actors' performances are amazing. The toy town becomes alive and real!
As the plot develops, the tension builds... First there is discomfort, then indignation, then shock, fear, anger... In three hours, the film made me experience such a whirlwind of emotions, strong and sincere, that after watching it, I tried for a long time to recover.
This film is a mirror. And the worst thing is for those who see themselves in one of the residents of Dogville. At first, I really believed that these people, though complex, were kind and would accept and sincerely love the good-natured and open Grace. But her openness and responsiveness only spoil the townspeople, and the young girl is turned into a slave, no longer considered a human being.
It becomes painful and upsetting for the innocent girl, and you become imbued with hatred for the damned Dogville. There are many powerful psychological moments to digest during the film. Tom looks particularly disgusting when he somehow manages to tell Grace that he loves her.
I felt not a shred of regret watching the final scene. But the end of the film raised questions. What would I do in the place of one of them? Is there anything in me similar to the vices of the inhabitants of Dogville? The film makes you think seriously. It would be gratifying if, after watching this wonderful film, there were more good people in the world...
Without a doubt, the film's script, combined with the magnificent performances of Nicole Kidman and the entire cast, unusual artistic discoveries, and brilliant directing, make this film a true masterpiece!
