There are no abstruse philosophical musings or wild statements—the efforts of Hollywood screenwriters... It is simply beautiful, like a picture drawn by a little boy with a wild interest in what will turn out. That boy is Tim Burton, and Burton is a master of his fantasies and our ‘undiscovered’ horizons of the subconscious.
You look at people and what surrounds them, and it becomes disgusting, because what they are is what we are. These identical houses and lawns, cars and words in the morning and before dinner, artificial smiles and clichés.
Edward is the negation of all this, and his image is like the other side of the coin of this whole circus. The world is a circus, and people are clowns.
Winona Ryder played a fairly mediocre role, but she did what was required of her. She was not a model girl, but she was not, as was typical for those times, an anarchist and a contradiction of the “moral” principles of the era. She was simply a bundle of energy around which everything sometimes revolved (including the main bundle of energy, Edward). She complemented what was sometimes lacking: banal tenderness and gentleness, and sometimes even stupidity.
It has already been written above, and it has been written correctly, that Depp uttered only a dozen phrases, but all his skill, all his tsarism and spirit were reflected in his eyes, gestures, and sometimes even in the absence of any facial expressions... But how much does it take to say that all this is “strange” and how “painful” it is? No. Depp started masterfully, and he continued as an actor with a capital “A.”
Burton is a dreamer and an artist of “hidden” fantasies. Depp is the soul of what everyone wants to discover but cannot. And only a few...
