This film is worth watching primarily because of the cast. Sonny Bono himself (Cher’s first husband), the one-of-a-kind Divine, and Jerry Stiller (father of Ben Stiller and Amy Stiller), who is still full of energy today (in the 2007 film "Hairspray") and was more than agile back in 1988.
Ricky Lake is amazing as Tracy Turnblad; at 20, she was a chubby little thing, but she was so agile in the twist that no one could match her. But just look at how she looks now, and don’t be surprised that she also appeared in the new version of "Hairspray", albeit in a cameo role.
Music, music, and more music—this film is a pleasure to watch, and even better to put on in the background to dance to the good old twist.
It captures the great atmosphere of the ’60s, both culturally and with a political twist—the fight for equal rights for white and Black dancers, the right to perform together in the same show on the same day, the rights of interracial couples, and so on.
