Before watching the movie, I didn't have high expectations for it.
I imagined that at one point in the plot, the characters will begin, in typical horror style, to blunt, expose themselves and others to danger and die absurdly.
But I was pleasantly surprised.
Firstly, the quality of the picture and the atmosphere of the cold and gloomy Antarctica transmitted by it. The lighting in some scenes (dark blue background and red flare) is pleasing to the eye.
Second, the design of the monsters. Due to the fact that in those days it was not possible to use computer graphics, the monsters were molded live. And the result, I can tell you, is very impressive. Perhaps these are the ugliest monsters I've seen in films. The closest similar analogue can only serve as necromorphs from the game 'Dead Space', only more creepy and humanoid.
Third, and most importantly, the characters behave like real sane people in almost all situations. Will explain.
One of the employees of the center noticed a strange creature in a dog cage. In this situation, a typical character from other horror films would certainly have worked out: he will stumble, then he will freeze in place like a paralyzed person, then some kind of stupidity that usually infuriates the viewer.
And here, surprisingly, the character acts logically: he runs away, notifies the others, and then the hero Kurt Russell immediately thinks to bring a flamethrower to this place (here I certainly got a kick out). And so throughout the plot.
In the end, the sane characters and the cozy dark atmosphere made watching this film extremely interesting for me.
