The casting in this movie is interesting. The caring husband who’s doing everything he can to get a promotion is played by Kurt Russell. The refined beauty—who, oddly enough, is a schoolteacher and a devoted wife—is played by Madeline Stowe. A police officer with sadistic tendencies—(unsurprisingly) Ray Liotta. Everyone is perfectly cast.

The psychological depth that permeates the entire film, the ambiguous dialogue, and the minimalist yet beautiful soundtrack—all of this showcases the film at its best.

There’s a stunning atmosphere of tension that keeps the viewer on edge throughout the entire film. I’m surprised that American audiences gave it such low ratings. The film has everything a true psychological thriller should include. It’s a classic of the genre, one that I personally rate very highly.
