Because I really love movies that take a major historical event—one that’s been depicted a hundred times with parades, maps, generals, and heroic close-ups—and then suddenly reimagine it through some almost imperceptible detail. In this case, through a weather forecast. It doesn’t sound particularly cinematic until you remember that sometimes circumstances can arise when more depends on the clouds than on tanks.

June 1944. The Allies are preparing for the Normandy landings, but the success of the operation depends on the weather. British meteorologist James Stagg must convince the Allied command, including Dwight Eisenhower, that an inaccurate forecast could cost thousands of lives and possibly change the course of the war.

The film focuses on the few days leading up to the landing, when the war suddenly turns into a debate among scientists, military officials, analysts, and people who simply cannot afford to make a mistake. And that really resonates with me. I love stories like this, where a well-known event is revealed through a little-known cog in the machine—without which the entire massive machine might simply have failed to function.

At first glance, the word “meteorologist” doesn’t sound like it would make for a thrilling movie. No one buys popcorn thinking, “Let’s see a guy staring at a barometer.” But that’s precisely the film’s charm. Maras turns a weather forecast into a drama of almost epic proportions.
Every argument, every map, every debate about cyclones here sounds as if what’s at stake isn’t tomorrow’s walk, but the fate of the weather front. In fact, that’s exactly what it was.

Andrew Scott was the biggest discovery for me here. In "Pressure", I saw him in a whole new light.
His character, Stagg, is almost always stone-faced, showing minimal outward emotion—very composed, cold. Yet at the same time, you can sense a completely raw nerve beneath the surface. It unexpectedly reminded me of Fassbender in "Prometheus": an outwardly almost sterile facade, but beneath it, a tension that never lets up. He plays a man who knows that being right is worth nothing in and of itself if you can’t get that point across to the decision-makers. And convincing the generals to postpone the largest amphibious operation in history is, to put it mildly, not the same as asking your neighbors to move their barbecue because of the rain. 

Brendan Fraser’s portrayal of Eisenhower is also fascinating. After "Whale", it’s hard to see him simply as the nice guy from the adventure movies of my childhood. His Eisenhower is neither a bronze statue nor a walking quote from a textbook. He’s a man who must make a decision, after which thousands of people will either head for shore or stay behind to wait until history itself begins to unravel at the seams.

Anthony Maras is a one-man band who, in his projects, often strives to control nearly every aspect of the process: screenplay, direction, editing, and production.
And his choice of subject matter also resonates deeply with me. His early short film "Azadi" dealt with the plight of Afghan refugees in Australian detention camps. "The Palace" addressed the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. "Hotel Mumbai" recounted the 2008 terrorist attacks. Now comes a film about a meteorologist who finds himself in the same room as history and is forced to argue with it in the language of science. These films vary greatly in subject matter, but Maras has a clear thread running through them: he’s interested in people who find themselves at a pressure point where a personal decision suddenly becomes part of a major catastrophe or a great rescue.

This is the kind of film where you know the outcome in advance, but you still follow the unfolding events as if the outcome were still to be determined. Maras didn’t invent a new language for historical cinema; rather, he took a little-known aspect of a famous event and turned it into a tense, intelligent, and actor-driven drama. I really love movies like this: they don’t rewrite history, but rather shed light on the parts of it that are usually overlooked by mainstream cinema.
