They Call Me Jeeg Robot 4K 2015 is an unconventional Italian response to Hollywood superhero blockbusters, balancing on the edge of parody, gritty drama, and dark comedy. Director Gabriele Mainetti has created a surprisingly down-to-earth story about a petty thief named Enzo (Claudio Santamario), who, after bathing in the toxic waste of the Tiber River, gains incredible strength and the ability to regenerate. Instead of saving the world, he initially uses his gift to continue his criminal activities, until a chance encounter with a mentally unstable girl named Alessiawho is convinced that Enzo is the embodiment of a Japanese anime robot—sets in motion his transformation into a hero.
The film captivates with its sincerity and lack of the gloss typical of the genre. The picture is deliberately gritty, cynical, and full of grotesque characters, the main one being the psychopathic villain Lo Zingarro, played by the charismatic Luca Marinelli. Blending social satire, a caricatured portrayal of the criminal underworld, and a dash of Italian flair, the film resembles equally wild genre experiments such as the Russian film Super. However, unlike many of its counterparts, “Jeeg Robot” finds time not only for extreme violence and dark humor, but also for genuine, heart-wrenching drama, which makes the transformation of the repulsive antihero into a savior unexpectedly convincing.
Despite the abundance of clichés and a somewhat predictable plot, the film shines thanks to its well-developed characters and that very “Italian spirit.” This isn’t just a comic book adaptation, but rather an auteur’s take on the theme of good and evil, where the repulsive coexists with the heartwarming, and blunt satire gives way to sincere sadness. *They Call Me Jeeg Robot* is a unique film not for everyone, but fans of unconventional superhero stories and dark humor will find in it a true gem that they’ll want to watch again and again.
