The main character, played by Ryan Gosling, wakes up after a long sleep on a spaceship, with no memory of or understanding of who he is or where he is. A little later, he learns that he is the sole survivor on the ship, which had been sent to the “far worlds” in search of yet another way to save our Mother Earth. And, of course, an exciting and dangerous adventure awaits him as he searches for that very salvation. In my opinion, it’s impossible to continue even a brief description without spoilers. As you can imagine, the situation described above is quite familiar—we’ve seen similar plot setups many times before. And, by and large, that’s exactly the case. But in this case, that’s not a bad thing.

Don’t expect “Interstellar”-level depth or profound scientific discourse, theories, and the like from this film. As I see it, the scientific basis of the story depicted in the film takes a back seat. Yes, you could say this movie comes across as naive, but that doesn’t detract from it. It’s, first and foremost, a fairly lighthearted adventure film with a kind, pleasant, and at times very naive atmosphere. Gosling’s charisma, the gentle humor, the very impressive visuals with picturesque cosmic landscapes, the high-quality spaceship sets, and a plot that constantly makes you want to know what’s “around the corner” all make this film an engaging expeditionary adventure that you’ll want to watch.

However, it’s worth acknowledging that the runtime, which clocks in at over two and a half hours, is, in my opinion, a bit excessive. Some scenes could easily have been shortened, or even cut entirely. At times—and as strange as it may sound—the film starts to feel a bit tedious right up to the climax.

It’s a light, unobtrusive film that doesn’t overload you with scientific details—one you can easily watch with your kids as you embark together on an unusual and fascinating space adventure.
