I watched this film at a time similar to what is happening in this film. Zhulavsky created it just in the corresponding morbid and oppressed state. And it is precisely such states that help us achieve a certain effect in our own wanderings and ideas, if we try a little. The film had such an inspirational effect on me that it is extremely difficult to describe. In the film, I saw many elements that reminded me of 'The Exorcist', 'Rosemary's Baby', 'Fly' and 'Eraserhead' at the same time, which were spiced up with a light touch of Lovecraft. This film can hardly be called exceptional mysticism, it fends off more everyday things, coupled with some surreal experiences of the heroes. These experiences literally take on flesh and blood. This is a film about true obsession, despair and the desire to create an ideal. This is an obsession with your inexplicable feelings and thoughts, an obsession with ideas, an obsession with a person and your own devil. The film is multi-layered, and I still have not grasped its specific essence. The beautiful Isabelle Adjani is worth a separate mention. No, I never looked at her as a mediocre actress, but here she created just the most real image of a demon possessed - hysterics, tense nerves, like strings, tension in every movement. Her eyes reflect genuine madness, insanity. And the scene in the subway became a kind of apogee of her demoniac state, where she comprehended her Satori.

Of course, Sam Neal, whom many know from the films In the Jaws of Madness, Through the Horizon, and Jurassic Park, did not remain in the background either. Here he is assigned the role of the one who observes the obsession of his wife and suffers from the obsession himself - he is obsessed with Anna. And he is ready to forgive her everything, just to be with her. He was also able to convey those feelings of anger and despair in certain scenes, that rushing character of the victim of circumstances in the form of love and hatred for his wife, which for him took on two different hypostases. But, as it turns out, not only Anna became ambivalent in his eyes. After all, she, too, is at the crossroads of rabies, where on both sides a loving husband and child, and on the other - something, a painfully created god in a hysterical fit, mucus and convulsions. Zulawski has created something grotesque and realistic at the same time. The realism of feelings and states, but the grotesque of thoughts that become real. And the horror here lies only in the human mind.
