That's not to say I was pessimistic about the announcement that a complete reboot of 'Fantastic Four' was coming. I was rather even curious to see how they would pull it all off a second time, since it was announced that the story would now be based on the Ultimate universe, which I am very much to my liking. Teenagers who have incredibly managed to get such amazing super powers. I've been waiting for this movie, I was hoping that maybe something good would come of it. I really liked Joshua Trank for the director's choice, his 'Chronicle' is awesome, and the cast was a joy to watch.
But still, I'll try to be brief. The film is awful. They ruined absolutely everything, the plot is useless, editing has holes, action and special effects do not impress, and there are too damn few of them in the film, dialogues are outrageously boring. The cast, while not bad and trying to make up for all the horror that happens on screen, still falls short.
Honestly, I didn't expect it to be this bad. Yes, I read a lot of negative reviews for this movie, and I was very upset that this movie was being watered down like this. But after seeing this 'shidivore' in person, I realized that this film is even worse than imagined. I'm ready to give this movie an award for 'worst comic book movie' in history. It's a shame, really, that a movie like this got screwed up in almost every place, because the story is interesting enough.
The good thing about the movie is the first half. Yes, it is really not bad, not perfect of course, but very good. You can really see that Joshua Trank had his hand completely in the first half of the film. It's bleak, it's serious, it screams that something terrible, unimaginable, creepy is coming. The first half clearly set the stage for something far more epic. But the second half blots out the whole first half and flushes it all down the toilet without a shred of pity. You can see that Joshua Trank had absolutely no part in what came next. Everything changes, the atmosphere, the editing is different. It's a shame.
The main villain is nothing. And it's not even about his appearance, which doesn't follow the canon at all. It's the fact that the story of this character is not interesting. I'm a villain because I want to be and I can be. I will destroy you all, and again, because I want to and can do it. Though the character is pretty tough, and I liked that.
The cast is not bad, very good. You can clearly see that each of them tried, but, alas, even they could not save this movie in any way.
'Fantastic Four' is terrible, both as a stand-alone film and certainly as a comic book movie. It's a shame to realize this, but they destroyed this story, just destroyed it. There's almost nothing in it that could do anything to dispel that gut of negativity. The movie is not memorable in any way. It's a shame.
