One of my favorite movies, but I must admit that the plot is lame on both legs: the motivation of many of the characters is unclear, the main character, instead of doing his main task - the search for the beast, the investigation of murders, all day long he grooms Marianne, and in the evenings he hangs around in a brothel... The main villain, you might say, exposes himself, 'here I am!' And that was the job of Monsieur the naturalist. And a lot of other, incomprehensible from the point of view of common sense, things.
But the pluses of the film are much more! And I love it for that. An excellent cast, terrific music, camerawork, decorations, costumes, the atmosphere of the film... You can see at once that the creators worked out everything to the smallest detail! In this respect - no shoddy work! You could see right away where the entire budget went :) . Another nice surprise was the adventurous move to bring the Eastern martial arts into the film. It made the movie not just a dumb historical costume movie.
Although the costumes should be noted separately, they are simply gorgeous, not only beautiful, but they also reveal the characters' character, they are very symbolic. All the local nobles are dressed in red, you can see at once that they are people of one mind, accomplices. Against their background Fronsac and Thomas and his grandfather, dressed in red, seem like white crows, they are different from this society. Marianne also wears red from the beginning of the film, but when she fell in love with Fronsac, the heroine's costumes become other colors: blue, blue, green... Jean-François wears black and red: he belongs to the local nobility on the one hand, and he does his 'black business' on the other. The clothes of the Indian Mani are of brown shades - the color of the earth and nature. This ingenious color device gives a stunning effect! So does the constant ominous fog enveloping everything around, the gloomy interiors and dungeons...
All in all, the whole movie is a feast for the eyes! It's worth watching if only for its beauty and atmosphere.
