Before Jon Favreau brought “Iron Man” to the world, he was virtually unknown to audiences, and even if anyone had heard of him, they didn’t take him seriously. Favreau has played quite a few acting roles, but mostly in supporting—and often minor—roles; he also has several directing credits to his name, though the films were nothing special. Simply put, he remained in the shadows for a long time until one day he woke up famous. But the creative side of his personality apparently wouldn’t let him rest, and he decided to make movies—even if only for himself, rather than for a mass audience.

“Made” marks Jon Favreau’s directorial debut (though he had previously directed two films, neither of which made it to theaters); not only did he direct the film, but he also played the lead role, and the temptation to take on roles in his own films remains with him to this day. Most likely, the difference is that some directors never want to appear in their own films, while others do so regularly or from time to time. Vince Vaughn played another role in “Made,” and the two had previously worked together on four other films. Actor friends? That’s exactly right, and they first met on the set of the 1993 film *Rudy*.

There are two main characters in “Made” — Bob and Ricky, played by Favreau and Vince Vaughn, respectively. They’re boxers who’ve decided to switch careers to become bodyguards, but they constantly run into problems. A story about losers? Not exactly.
What makes these characters so compelling is that they’re always together, yet they’re such polar opposites that they have practically nothing in common. Moreover, while Favreau’s character is a genuine good guy, Vince Vaughn plays a practically insane neurotic who constantly wants to get drunk and pick a fight with someone. One is normal, while the other constantly drags him toward the abyss—this dynamic not only drives their relationship but also propels the entire plot of the film.

In terms of acting, Vince Vaughn outshines everyone else combined, as he gave a very convincing performance—or, to put it simply, an excellent one. Favreau, on the other hand, had a completely opposite challenge, but he handled it quite well: he chose his role in the film very wisely, opting for a lighthearted part that required him to portray composure and calmness.
The film also features a cameo by the famous American rapper and producer Sean Combs, also known as Puff Daddy, also known as P. Diddy. Incidentally, this role marked his feature film debut. Essentially, he plays himself in the film—only his character has a different name—and the role itself has such limited screen time that it’s hard to seriously evaluate his performance. There’s absolutely no one else among the cast worth singling out.

The directing is slightly above average, and in some scenes and sequences, the pacing drags and the balance is lost; moreover, all the other flaws and rough edges are glaringly obvious. However, taken as a whole, the film feels fairly lighthearted—in other words, it’s perfectly watchable. Generally speaking, many directors’ first films rarely turn out well—it’s like the first pancake, so to speak. Nevertheless, “Made” is a completely forgettable and empty film, since there is absolutely nothing to it, almost no meaning, and the idea seems to be floating somewhere in the clouds. To describe it in more detail, the film is very simple, one-dimensional, and devoid of meaning—which is precisely why it goes right over any viewer’s head and is memorable only for Vince Vaughn’s performance, while everything else contributes absolutely nothing. Looking for meaning where there is none is a completely futile exercise, but even as an entertaining movie, this film is also rather mediocre and is only worth watching once.

Probably, if Favreau were to make this film today, he’d do it completely differently—in a more respectable way—but we learn from our mistakes, and the past is an invaluable source of experience for any director. Basically, there are a lot of movies like “Made, an incredibly large number, and even if such films go unnoticed by audiences, for the people who created them, it’s still a step forward in their careers—and simply a job. Not all films are excellent and perfect, but nevertheless—they should strive for that, because art demands perfection, and there is certainly no limit to it.
