The painting "The Cove" is about the annual dolphin hunt organized by the inhabitants of the town of Taiji. Fishermen drive the mammals into a narrow bay, some of them are caught for sale in oceanariums, but most of them are killed to sell the meat at markets. Up to 23,000 dolphins are killed in the coastal waters of Taiji each year.
