A novelty from the director of "Living Steel" and "Nights at the Museum" with Ryan Reynolds appears on the screens. If you think about it, this is the first film of the summer, not based on any franchise, not a sequel, reboot or film adaptation - an amazing number.
Our main character is not even a hero, he is just nps in the game, performing a number of inherent functions. But one day he meets a girl who turns his world upside down. This pushes the Guy out of the "comfort zone" and change the rules of the game in order to become free.
To my surprise, "protagonist" turned out better than I thought. Quite a simple story sometimes unfolds from unexpected sides, deceiving our expectations. The plot is filled with minor details that help take this movie out of the ranks of the conveyor blockbuster.
The "protagonist" conceptually sounds extremely interesting, a kind of "Truman Show" in a video game, where the monotony of the hero's life leads to the realization that he is capable of more. A rather obvious allusion to our reality does not prevent us from being imbued with the message: each of us can do everything. This is a cute and incredibly romantic movie with the right and optimistic mood.
Reynolds and Jody Comer work great together, they have natural chemistry and great dynamism. The main antagonist, played by Taika Waititi, was clearly intended to be a cartoonish villain. That kind of overkill and total dedication stood out too much from the rest, working with varying degrees of success.
It should be said that the film is a little redundant in terms of plot and visual, and can sometimes be tiresome. The first hour works like clockwork, but with the introduction of new variables in the plot, the imbalance and force of the story begins to be felt.
Despite this, the final picture will not leave you indifferent. Everything comes together in one way or another, causing genuine experience and involvement.
The picture has an unobtrusive and universal humor, bright and well-developed visuals, competently staged action and, most importantly, a well-developed story. It can be said to be the perfect family movie that leaves behind a feeling of a well-spent time.
