The Howling 4K 1981

Almost thirty years have passed since the release of Joe Dante's film "Howl", thirty years, during which young and not so people watch it with the same interest, laugh and get scared in the same places as the audience in cinemas many years ago ... Despite the fact that the budget of the film is only one million dollars - a ridiculous amount by Hollywood standards, and not only now, but even then, and the special effects are an order of magnitude inferior to modern ones, for example, the same Van Helsing, Howl is still interesting and not only to the older generation, as a memory of the golden years of youth, but also to the young spectator spoiled by modern cinema. There is some charm and zest in Dante's creation that makes it special and interesting.

Howl is a classic werewolf horror movie. The creators have worked hard to reproduce the myths and legends about werewolves. So, for example, the scene of action is a small village surrounded by a gloomy, twilight forest, in which the ideal conditions for such a specific "resort" are created. The very appearance of a werewolf is taken from old books, the make-up, which now may seem ridiculous and ridiculous at the beginning of the 80s, was almost a breakthrough and a new word in reproducing the transformation of a person into a beast, the creators tried to find something new to show what was before that nobody succeeded. An interesting fact is that during the filming, only the head and paw of the werewolf were used separately, since there was no money for full make-up and the scenes with the full-length beast were filmed later.

Perhaps the appeal of Dante's film can be explained by the atmosphere created on the screen due to the excellent acting, I would especially like to mention the performers of the roles of werewolves Elizabeth Brooks (Marsha), Robert Picardo (Eddie), Don McLeod (TS). Marsha is perhaps the brightest and most interesting character, even Karen (Dee Wallace Stone) looks like a gray mouse against her background, Elizabeth Brooks brilliantly coped with the role of an insidious and dangerous seductress, her heroine is characterized by wild beauty and animal magnetism, it is not surprising that no one can resist her spell. By the way, erotica is the Achilles heel of all low-budget films, due to which the creators strive to attract the attention of the viewer, sliding towards cheap porn and inappropriate scenes with nudity, which, apart from bewilderment and laughter, can not cause anything, gives Dante's film sharpness and charm, shading what is happening on the screen events, emphasizing the animal nature of the inhabitants of the colony.

Oddly enough, there is a place of irony in this film, despite such a frightening topic, because if you think about it, it contains all the cliches, such as, for example, escape through the thicket from a werewolf or silver bullets, the only way to get rid of these creatures. However, where it should be funny, for some reason it becomes scary, and, conversely, where it should be scary it becomes funny. Often, while watching, there is a desire to shout to the heroine that she needs to hide or run away, since the danger is already nearby, I want to open her eyes to "relatives" and "friends", such emotions would hardly appear if the film was another passing horror movie. "Howl" is not only a film about werewolves, he himself is like a werewolf, a shape-shifter, the true nature of which can be discerned only with a full moon, or, in extreme cases, observing the events taking place very, very carefully.
