The Lover is Jean-Jacques Annaud's best work. An incredibly sensual, delicate and very beautiful film. Precisely sensual, devoid of gaudy sentimentalism. Jane March is adorable (perhaps her best role ever).
This story, shown against the backdrop of hot Saigon, is the eastern prototype of the love of Humbert and Lolita, only even more graceful than that of Nabokov. The camera work is unique. Jeanne Moreau's offscreen voice sounds intimate, heartfelt.
There is nothing superfluous, vulgar, ugly in this film. And each time you watch this masterpiece, as for the first time, and with each viewing this film touches even more and more.
