"Sword and Sorcerer" is the debut film for director Albert Pune, a man whose work I am very impressed with. Even if his films do not have a big budget - but you can't call them boring (at least his works of the 80-90s). And the film "Cyborg" - I consider a masterpiece, and Jean-Claude Van Damme's best film.
The plot's ferment is textbook. The classic RPG-story, which became the basis for many role-playing games.
So - there is a good and bright country that lives and flourishes, and all enemies fight back. And there is another - the head of which is a scoundrel Cromwell, who does not rest, as I want a better territory to conquer. This desire led him to resort to a conspiracy with the forces of evil.
Thanks to this, victory after victory went raspberry. Leaving behind a land drenched in blood (what an appropriate stamp) he got to the king of a prosperous country. Eliminating him and the queen, he did not get to the Talon prince, who promised revenge.
Years have passed...
Cromwell continues to reign, but the land is filled with rumors of a tanswain war, which turns out to be... it's not hard to guess.
Plus the set includes the very wizard of the dark forces that Cromwell betrayed and has questions for him.
We've seen this somewhere before, and more than once.
Well, after all, the film's release date is 1982, and there shouldn't seem to be any questions.
In spite of the debut the film is obviously not amateur, and not even trash... Pune had a budget that did not allow to make battle scenes for one thousand people, but the scenery allowed to make acceptable, and special effects with monsters are normal. Plus the cast is seasoned, they all have a solid list of roles before "The Sword and the Sorcerer" and after, although there are no stars.
What lets the film down is its predictability - there will be no plot revelations. You can predict its development literally 20 minutes after the start.
And the characters are ordinary and standard. And the dialogues are of a kindergarten level. Not serious.
Turned out to be a classic fantasy, which is not destined to become a classic.
