In the not-too-distant future, humanity is not having the best of days. An acute shortage of normal food, earthquakes and floods make the planet not the most comfortable place to live. To make matters worse, there is a sect whose leader controls the minds of his followers. They look like ordinary people, but as soon as they, or their leader, are threatened, they turn into helpless zombies. With them, and their leader, and struggles our hero Jack, whose mind is sent back in time to catch the leader - Whistler.
The plot in the film develops rather quickly, the viewer does not have time to get bored. The film shifts abruptly from sci-fi to an inexpensive action chase movie, with interesting ideas. The creators clearly understood that they have neither the experience nor the budget, but have a great idea which they really wanted to realize. At the time of filming, the actors were not known to the audience. Tim Thomerson, who has starred in B movies (Cherry 2000 and the cult vampire horror flick "Almost Darkened") did a great job as Detective Jack. He does not understand the rules and laws of the 20th century, can be abrupt and rude, but still he gets used to the new life and falls in love with the heroine Helen Hunt. Here the future Oscar winner plays a young rebel who works in a supermarket and attends punk concerts. It is curious to watch how the already serious and in-demand actress started her career.
It is worth noting that the filmmakers intentionally did not make the film overly serious. The movie has a short running time, a lot of jokes and funny moments. Except for the first 10 minutes of the movie and the delayed bullet effect (which was shown 15 years before matrix was released) there are no special effects. But it only goes to the advantage of the film, because the viewer is not overloaded with unnecessary information, trying to jump over his head.
