The most vivid impression was left not even by the film itself, but by the reaction of the audience to it. I have never seen anything like it. Never. Several dozen people did not leave their seats for about ten minutes, probably after watching. No one spoke a word, everyone just sat there and were silent, lost in thought. Even the credits are over, the lights have been turned on, and the audience is still sitting ... It looks strong, and, probably, should be the best characteristic of the film.
But it would be a lie to say that the film had the same effect on me. Yes, he suppressed the psyche and drove a little into a stupor, but emotionally hooked it not at all as I expected. Perhaps excessive expectations ruined part of the effect, but the feeling that something was wrong did not leave almost the entire timing of the picture. But there is also a logical explanation for this. Because I still don't remember films about the Second World War, where the Germans are shown as people, and not exclusively as murderers without fear and reproach.
Unfortunately, after 50 minutes the viewing became completely unbearable, and I sat, counting down the minutes until the end of the session. But this is not surprising. I bet on a bagel that this is exactly the effect the creators of the picture sought. They tried to dunk their viewer in all this bloody, dirty and icy mess of madness called "Battle of Stalingrad". They succeeded in it in full. That's why the discomfort is so strong.
I don't even see any point in discussing acting somehow, as well as the work of a director, screenwriter, composer and other creators, since there is no special quality of narration, but there are emotions. There is a piece of the life of a few ordinary soldiers of the fascist army. And that's all. Their misadventures and misery. The decline of the German army is shown. The very bottom is shown. Despair, pain, fear - everything is shown base that only can be in a person. And the language will not turn - on the one hand, to praise the director for this, but on the other hand - thanks to him for such a display of the theme of the Second World War. For a look from the other side. For the lack of assessments, ideology and even a hint of any propaganda.
