The extraordinary and utterly unforgettable work of French 'visual' director Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Filmed in the 'pre-Amelis' era, this fantasy-techno-genre tale will undoubtedly appeal to fans of 'feast for the eyes'. Like a couple of other Wren films I've seen, the visuals in this creation are top-notch. At times, it even smacks of overkill.
Besides the juicy visuals, what this film has in common with 'Amelie' are a few actors, clearly attached as a bonus to the director. And also, albeit with a different authorship, but also superb music that creates the necessary atmosphere. Angelo Badalamenti wrote the music for this picture.
The plot of City of Lost Children is utterly psychedelic, but has a rather bearable transparency. I wouldn't say that the plot is what I liked most here. Rather the opposite. Amazing characters, sur-atmosphere, magical music, and brilliant camera moves are strung on top of it (the plot). And this is all really impressive.
I can't help but mention Ron Perlman and the young heroine. Very likable (the former in everything but looks) characters. They are memorable.
For fans of the directing of Genet, Burton and the like, 'The City... ' is recommended for viewing on a must-see basis!
