This may sound too trite, but people's mores and opinions change from century to century. At the dawn of cinema, no one would have seen films in which the main characters were black, much less those that fought against foreign white invaders. Now, such films go straight to the major film festivals of the world, where the jury, succumbing to the deceitful influence of these works, wiping tears and blowing their noses, give top marks. With a swipe of the finger, a film made by people often untalented becomes a legend (in narrow circles and not for long).
'The Woman King' is a manipulative and expensive pseudo-documentary pacifier. It is clear that from such glorification of the African tribe of Dahomey and the endless stream of dirt poured on the European colonizers (screw the powdered musketeers!), the smell of Oscar while watching it is not interrupted even by 'Brokeback Mountain'.
And no, the film is really made in style. Viola Davis once again gives a great acting performance. Yes, even John 'That Black Stormtrooper from 'Star Wars'' wasn't annoying. The only problem is the way the creators turn the original story upside down. After all,
1) The Agoges revered men and obeyed them in everything;
2) The Agoji were not noble and generous warriors, on the contrary, they were notorious for their cruelty and bloodthirstiness;
3) They were the king's wives, serving a purely official function;
4)The Agoges themselves traded with their African neighbors.
This will suffice. It is up to you, and I apologize if I have offended and do not share your opinion.
