A young beauty comes to the island to stay with her rich friend. Here she learns new sensations, and at night she feels like she is being tortured. So she becomes involved in a sadistic game of orgies and murder.
Jesus Franco has been interested in the work of the notorious Marquis de Sade throughout his directing career. I had seen a couple of the director's films before, but they didn't impress me. Such a typical exploitation. But this picture makes an impression, albeit ambiguous.
This is a modern adaptation of the short story Eugenie de franval. Jesús Franco kneads the movie densely, full of forbidden pleasures, BDSM and the naked female body. He plays with color, especially in the red room scenes and at times the film almost looks like an art house. The ending is quite unexpected and impressive.
The main roles are played by Maria Romm and Marie Liljedahl. Both look great, especially since they are naked for most of the film. But the actual erotic scenes here are shot aesthetically and not vulgar, and the forms of the actresses are very good. Plus, there is also Christopher Lee. He is, however, not much, but his role is one of the key ones.
It's a very unconventional film somewhere between art house and sexploitation. It's curious, to say the least.
