One of the highest-grossing films of 1974. In the U.S. in particular, it overtook such hits as Lumet's Murder on the Orient Express and Polanski's Chinatown. It even won the Golden Globe as best comedy or musical. There's a reason for that.
In fact, a simple movie about a match between the prisoners and the guards in prison has become very popular, thanks to the ease of presentation, the brilliant dialogue and excellent acting of each and every actor. It is enhanced by the oddly corrupt soccer player Paul Crewe, played by Burt Reynolds.
In my opinion, the film reveals the theme of prison and freedom to a much greater extent than, for example, the excellently made 'Cool Hand Luke'.
Burt Reynolds' best film work.
