Hollywood, the 30's... This alone was enough to get me interested, and here it was also a detective genre, and an interesting plot, and excellent actors. I went to the movie with enthusiasm and hopes, which, alas, were not justified.
The private detective Phillip Marlowe is approached by a mysterious lady with a request to find her missing lover. The search leads the man to an elite private club and a popular Hollywood film studio, introduce him to the people who make up the very color of the City of Angels.
I was hoping we would be shown the underside of the movie industry - all those star factories and dream merchants. And they did. But somehow not convincing at all.
First of all, the pluses.
The atmosphere is wonderful. Really takes you back to Los Angeles a hundred almost years ago. Landscapes, costumes, conversations - everything is very believable and authentic.
There were sometimes interesting plot twists - it seemed to be about to start the heat, but no, the hope was in vain. The actions of the protagonists are not always logical. And the secondary characters do not even have time to sympathize, so quickly they disappear from the horizon.
Very much liked Liam Neeson and Jessica Lange. Diane Kruger is not bad either, but the development of her heroine was not enough for me.
Now about the minuses.
He, in principle, just one, but overlaps all the advantages of the picture. The movie has a plot and there is acting. But it is very boring. Very. Boring and drawn out.
I was left a little disappointed. Maybe someone else will have better luck.
