It's been 18 years, and the film looks classy, magical, beautiful. Such a little dark tale-legend, once told at bedtime... Truly, every frame, every detail has been thought out. The notorious narration pattern gives a lot of food for imagination, feelings, thoughts. The extraordinary stylized music and the amazing voice of Jimmy Somerville, the exaggerated, extravagant costumes and makeup... This movie is a must-see.
Each episode is divided and titled - a technique often used and here it is extremely successful and consistent with the narrative.
About Tilda. It's very interesting who came up with this 'thing' on which the whole film is based - the close-ups and quick glances, the instantaneous focus of Tilda's gaze on the viewer... a great find. And Tilda's gaze is ethereal. Her portrayal of the man is very well done - straight from the paintings of the great Dutch. Tilda is magnificent in the finale - a soul who has come to know herself and the world.
...It's just that there is a soul in this film.
