I hardly expected to like the sequel to Hitchcock's masterpiece so much.
But look, it's pretty clear that the second-third-fourth installments of any movie lose out to the first one, exceptions are rare. So compared to how 'Psycho 2' could have been made, certainly decades later, it's a push forward. Director Richard Franklin has paid his best tribute to the master Hitchcock.
Norman Bates returns after years in a mental hospital to a normal life. Normal. As is the norm of the genre, the ghosts of the past haunt him. But it is not for nothing that we are taught to fear the living, not the dead. Gradually the plot acquires shades of suspense and detective intrigue, and then so twisted that you sit in anticipation with the ever-present, literally screaming in your head question: 'Well?!', wanting to know what, WHY the story ends, who is the killer, who is the next victim and what are the solutions to the new mysteries. And at first I thought that everything would be much simpler, that the main character would only go crazy again.
By the way, I was very surprised and pleased with the second ending after the tense ending of the main story. It fits in perfectly and adds to the intrigue.
Yes, there are more great and brilliant movies out there, no argument. There are movies with more twists and more interesting murders in terms of sophistication.
But the experience of watching it is more important than comparisons with other movies.
