In connection with the release of the remake, I decided to watch the original British 'And Soon the Darkness'. Since I'm the first on KP rated this movie, it seems that except for me, no one here has not watched it.
Initially I expected to see something brutal a la 'Last House on the Left' or 'Woman's Day'. But Robert Fuest's movie is not a slasher; there are no violent scenes and gory details at all. But it's great in other ways. At once addictive, in some places subtly sinister, in some places nostalgically pleasant atmosphere. Nerve-tingling music and excellent camerawork. Charming and convincing performance of actresses Pamela Franklin and Michelle Dotrice (mostly Pamela, because her partner has little screen time). The ending is also good, unpredictable until the finale. Although it does not strike the imagination and with such an intriguing main action you still hope for something more.
In short, a great movie, quite Hitchcockian level. Once again I was convinced that many little-known old films without awards and claims are better than other recognized classics. But now I'm waiting for the remake with apprehension... I feel that the wonderful original will be leveled to the level of some 'Turistas'.
