Mr. Araki must be very fond of Kafka, especially his masterpiece “The Transfiguration”, if he made up such an ending for his film. And he must also love the Spanish genius Salvador Dali, because the movie “Nowhere” is very reminiscent of the artist's paintings.
“Nowhere” is a kind of surreal world. Every character is at least a little strange. The picture begins with a moment where the main character in the embrace of his bisexual fantasies masturbates in the bathroom. And then - all the attributes of movies of this genre: sex, drugs, violence and modern music. The movie is full of minor characters, but all of them are very colorful and memorable for a long time.
The main character of the movie walks around with a video camera all the time and shoots everything. He feels that he is about to die in a fire or explosion and wants to capture his death on film. He has a cute girlfriend whom he loves and wants to marry. But the girlfriend favors free relationships and therefore sleeps with whomever she wants. She has a friend Lucifer - a lesbian, whom our protagonist can't stand. At the beginning of the picture the three of them go to a bar for breakfast, where all the “golden youth” of the city gathers. In the bar we learn the main theme of the day - in the evening there will be a cool party and everyone wants to get there.
From this moment the director introduces us to the other inhabitants of the town. This is a beautiful and trusting girl who spends the day with Very Big Star (a little later he takes off his mask and we see the true face of this bastard - he beats and rapes the girl). This is a drug addict and an aspiring rock musician who can't find his way back. It's a couple who can't get enough of sex. It's sadomasahist Elvis and his weirdo girlfriend. They are teenagers who really want to get to the party with adults.
Throughout the movie, the characters say “I love you” to each other dozens of times, although none of them understands the true meaning of these words. For them, it's a simple phrase to use during sexual intercourse. The only person who gives any meaning to these words is the main character of the movie. But his girlfriend doesn't want to understand that.
Araki's picture could be no different from dozens of other similar ones, if there was no fantasy element in it. All the heroes live their lives and suddenly, it is unclear from where, appears... an alien and begins to capture the inhabitants of the city in captivity! And as usual, no one but the protagonist does not see him.
In the picture there is a share of philosophical subtext. There is a place for religion, but it acts on people in some strange way. A huge plus of the movie - no moralizing.
In general, those who like “other movies” should watch it.
