The Asians once again prove that they know how to make chilling horror movies. 'Exhuma' was released in South Korea in early 2024 and grossed a record-breaking amount of money. And then went on to conquer the world and became the most successful Korean movie of the year.
'Exhuma' begins with an introduction to two pairs of unusual professionals. Two young men perform rituals and communicate with spirits. And two grown men work with burials and select the perfect plots of land.
The young shamans go to their clients in America - there a wealthy Korean family has a very sick baby. Very quickly the specialists determine that the firstborn in this family dies because of an ancient curse and they need to excavate the grave of the grandfather, calling his own descendants to his grave.
That's how we get to Korea along with the characters. Four specialists take up a lucrative case and go to a strange burial - the grandfather turned out to be buried on the top of the mountain, there is no name on his tombstone, and relatives insist that the coffin can not be opened.
Since 'Exhuma' is a horror movie, you can easily predict that the events will not develop as the heroes planned and the evil spirit of the deceased will break free.
But this movie is not as simple as it seems in the first half of the story. Having dealt with the family curse and defeated the spirit of the grandfather, our heroes will come across even more terrible and dangerous forces.
Residents of South Korea went to watch this horror in theaters en masse not only for the thrill and spectacular picture. There was a massive historical military context hidden in 'Exhuma'. Both the events of the Japanese invasion of Korea and the history of the division of Korea into South and North will be drawn into the sinister events of the story.
Moreover, this horror about otherworldly forces will end up with an incredibly vivid pacifist message.
The heroes of 'Exhuma' will literally dig up old wars and conflicts with their warriors fixated on conquering their enemies. And then bury the past by proclaiming the value of today's world.
So if you are familiar with the history of Korea's political and military clashes with its neighbors, you will see historical references and vivid metaphor in this film. And if you're not, that's okay. In any case, 'Exhuma' is a fascinating multi-layered horror film.
