Here comes the conclusion of the brilliant X horror trilogy. The third and the last movie stands out from the first two.
The scope of the story has grown many times, locations have changed from chamber to urban. In terms of mood, the movie perfectly captures the spirit of the 80's, the setting is thought out to the smallest detail and with love for details. The characters' closet, hairstyles, makeup, urban entourage, all kinds of video salons with VHS tapes and neon signs - all factors work together and without a miss teleport the viewer to the era of that time. The soundtrack perfectly complements the visuals and sets the right dynamics. Who is close to this vibe, the movie will resonate in the heart and will definitely like it.
As far as the storyline is concerned, this is a direct sequel to the first “X” movie and is its sequel. The second installment “Pearl” was a prequel and told the backstory in 1918, meaning we do get to see the final story now. The main character Maxine, played by the absolutely stunning Mia Goth, survived the bloody massacre that took place in the first part of “X” in 1979, did not lose heart and continued her journey to conquer Hollywood. The events unfold six years later, in 1985. In her case, from the past Maxine could not escape, but she is not going to stop, no matter what.
There will be plenty of references to the first installment, flashbacks and other tweaks that will give more insight into the lore of the universe. The church father line from the first part will play a bigger role closer to the denouement, so it's important to pay attention to the characters' backgrounds and prepare to watch ahead of time if you decide to delve into the intricacies of the plot. The movie is not as simple as it may seem, which is characteristic of the first two parts. But even after watching the movie there will be no exact answers to the main questions and everyone will be able to interpret the plot in his own way. The movie already has several fan theories about what really happened, but without specifics. Director Ti West also mentioned that there might be a spin-off to the movie with or without Mia Goth, so the path for that is already laid out.
“MaXXXine” is a searing cocktail of many genres, very different from the first two films. Crime thriller prevails here, seasoned equally with both horror elements and comedic inserts. In fact, the third movie is a modern giallo, as the references to Italian horror films are most of all present here, the influence of Dario Argento and his films such as “The Bird with the Crystal Plumage” and “Suspiria” is strongly felt. It's an homage to the cult films of the last century, and you can see where Ti West drew his inspiration from. This is what makes the “X” trilogy stand out, as all three films are drastically different in terms of story presentation and what genre is at its core. To simplify, the first movie is a horror, the second is a drama, and the third is a thriller.
In terms of violence, the first part of “X” remains on a pedestal, but there are a couple of gore-moments that will please fans of the franchise.
And, of course, the main trump card of the movie, for the sake of which it is necessary to watch it is the most talented Mia Goth. The role in the trilogy “X” was written for her, how much she organically and emotionally plays on the screen, it's a pleasure to watch. It is impossible to tear your eyes away, and the time flies by very quickly. The highest praise for her acting and the ability to reincarnate in such a way.
In the end, we have a powerful ending to the story, a little inferior to the first part of “X”, but very strong and on par with “Pearl”. A spectacle that will definitely satisfy the hunger of those who waited almost 2 whole years for this movie to come out.
