One of the funniest comedies of the 20th century, and in the genre of movie parody, one of the first and still unrivaled masterpieces! Probably only Steve Martin's comedies in the 80's can rival the Zucker comedies in terms of the amount of humor and the amount of joy they bring! I remember my first viewing of “Airplane! - I nearly died laughing! I was laughing, crawling under the chair, tears in my eyes - an incomparable amount of jokes, gags and tricks!
The most interesting thing is that the creators of the movie - the most original comediographers of America - the trio Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker have enough imagination and fiction to stuff every frame of their brainchild with jokes to the limit, and their versatility has not been achieved by anyone else in the movie so far. I mean that hilarious combination of funny on the first, second and even third planes. In the first, the characters are saying something stupid, in the second there is some funny scene going on, and in the third there is a humorous sign hanging or something like that. Thus, we get a triple portion of laughter at the same time, and such a pace the creators keep the whole movie!
But the most interesting thing is that one of the most iconic comedies of all time was made for a measly 3 million! And the movie paid for itself 28 times, while nowadays directors pile tons of special effects into comedies, invite superstars, try to please the audience, but very few reach the level of 'Airplane!'.
The mind-blowing dialogues, heroic music and pure banter over 'Airplane!' and other disaster movies still makes a huge impression, even more than the original films.
It is also unforgettable that this movie was a comedy debut for two very serious actors, who after 'Aeroplane' became famous comedians - Lloyd Bridges and the great Leslie Nielsen, who later became the king of the parody genre. And this is where it becomes clear why.
The fact is that the acting in a parody should not be based on shouting, smiling, grimaces and jumps, as it is done in situation comedies. Parody puts serious people in idiotic positions and that is what achieves laughter! Therefore, the actors must play ordinary roles as if they were in a real movie-catastrophe. You can't take away from Nielsen's seriousness - he is super serious, frowning, solid and brutal! The perfect actor for comedies of this kind!
'Airplane!' is one of those comedies that almost never gets old, a lot of comedies have been forgotten since 'Airplane!' came out, but it is still one of the benchmarks of the genre!
