A powerful, strong, and exciting film, one of the few serious experiments in Jackie Chan's career. It will be of interest primarily to fans of good detective stories and social dramas, rather than fans of bone-crushing action films or Jackie Chan's typical humor.
No, in this film Jackie plays a cop, but unlike in Police Story, there are very few reasons to smile in this picture—the film reveals the problems of Hong Kong terrorism, police corruption, and the law enforcement agencies' unpreparedness to fight organized crime. It is about the ruthlessness of the business world, the unfair attitude of the people towards the police, the flip side of this seemingly noble profession, and much more...
The film provides ample cause for compassion and concern, and you genuinely empathize with the characters, so it does not serve as mere entertainment—the fights and stunts, although executed at the highest Jackie Chan level, are minimal. The fast-paced plot, constant understatements, and, of course, concern for the main characters keep you in suspense, intrigued, and captivated.
Along with “The Island of Fire” and “New Police Story,” this is a serious rebuttal to all those who do not believe in the possibility of Jackie Chan existing outside the image of a cheerful guy and in his acting talent. An excellent film, created intelligently, stylishly, and excitingly, not for the sake of stunts.
