Instead of a goodbye note, the father recorded an audio message, adding the birth certificate to the tape, leaving the girl alone to cope with what she had discovered, which he had known for a long time, hoping that it would pass, but her daughter's addiction to human flesh made itself felt again, and there was no more patience - so their bond was broken and the personal history began, a long journey to the point where there would be no end to the disappointment.
Before us is a classic road-movie, in which the loneliness of a traveling girl is suddenly shattered by a chance encounter with a self-similar old man, Sully, who was expecting a rapprochement with her on the basis of their species kinship, while Maren was looking for another ally.
That ally is a family splinter named Lee (not at all a minor role for Timothee Chalamet), who becomes her traveling companion for a long time, accompanying her from one faraway place to another, bonding with her until she realizes that she should rely on him too - a very peculiar alliance of cannibals bound exclusively to human existence.
Retro of the eighties envelops the companions in a lilac fog of slowly emerging romance, somehow strangely coexisting with bouts of forbidden taste and predatory tearing of the bodies of accidentally or not the victims, by implication only to a small extent good and decent, which is described here in a dotted line.
Guadagnino makes explicit use of the appealing aura of Chalamet, whose sad lyricism contrasts wildly with the excitement of the sophisticated hunter, and the whole canvas of the picture is made up of moral and ethical contradictions, where cannibalism is defined as a painful deviation of one of the natural needs, among which is love, which turns out to be the salvation of both.
Two lonelinesses clinging to each other, a burden that seems to torment both of them - the usual escape from self to self becomes a real dramatic play, immersed in beautiful musical and landscape scenery of hills and plains, with the lover's probably wildest proposal “I am all yours”, essentially meaning the same “Bones and All” as Luca Guadagnino seems to have conjured up.
