The movie exceeded all my expectations. Not having read the book or seen the Broadway adaptation, I thought the movie was the usual simple 'first the hero was bad, then he became good' type plot, but that was not the case at all. The plot twist and cliffhanger came as a real surprise and pleased me.
The storyline is logical and clear; there are no holes or understatements. All the shots and scenes were arranged in a gradient order, the climaxes were in the right places; the music, which was very much, coincided with the scenes and did not irritate with its frequency, but on the contrary, complemented and developed the scenario. Spoiler alert! Christine Chenoweth and Idina Menzel's cameos in the movie did not leave me indifferent, these incredible women in no way lost their vigor through the years, their voices also sound as resonant as they did twenty years ago, reminding me once again why they are the queens of Broadway!
As for the visualization of the film, you can talk about it for hours on end, the colorful picture on the big screen left a trace for a long time, and this despite the fact that many of the shots from the film were familiar to me long before going to the theater. The image of the movie was taken seriously, not forgetting the smallest details, once again admiring its budget. Just to think: for the sake of this movie they planted 9 million (!) tulips! Choreography, along with singing, became one of the key fragments, every movement was honed to perfection, which is ideal for a musical.
With the casting was also not lost: Ariana Grande played her role peerlessly, proving once again that she rightfully deserved a place in the picture. How happy it was to see that she was taken mostly due to her diligence and talent, rather than worldwide popularity. She did a great job practicing to achieve the very operatic voice that Broadway demands. Not only is her singing beautiful, Grande also managed to get into the role of Glinda. Glinda's friend (or rather, already current enemy) Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, blew me away with her powerhouse voice and acting, making me relive every moment right along with her. Her solid and determined character could be felt in the air. Their tandem with Ariana was as if created from above, as they say, the stars aligned in their case. Their contrasting voices were made for each other, forming a melodic combination. This duo made me want to say: 'this is what happens when two professionals come face to face'. We can't fail to mention the rest of the cast, such as Michelle Yeoh, who masterfully conveyed the feeling of a strict professor who is feared by everyone around her, as well as her firm intentions that she is ready to make Elphaba pay for her wrong choice at the end.
Overall, this movie deserves to get a few statuettes and hopefully take home the most important one as well. The first part made an incredible impression and I am very happy that I was able to see the movie in the original and on the big screen. I won't hesitate to say that it was the best three hours in a movie theater of my entire life. I look forward to next year and to the second part, which promises to be even more interesting and exciting.
