I'm a big fan of David Cronenberg. His twisted aesthetic is mesmerizing and exhilarating, even though I realize that for most average viewers, he's the author of 'not the most sensible horror movies'. The reason, I think, is that David has always been on the border between mainstream and arthouse (with the exception of a few definite standouts), and as a result he has remained outside of both camps: his films are neither mainstream nor entirely elitist. Which personally doesn't stop me from enjoying his work at all.
But his son went a little further and made the most Cronenbergian movie since 'Naked Breakfast' - a wild mix of noir, medical horror and dystopia, very stylish and visceral in atmosphere, deftly balancing on the edge of disgust. And what final shots! It's been a long time since I've experienced such a sense of embarrassed pleasure.....
Of course, there are minuses. The main one, as you can already understand, is the blatant imitation of his father. However, I'm ready to forgive it, because the result met all expectations, and in the future, I think Brandon will find his way. There's also a general sense of uncertainty about the direction (though more importantly, the movie doesn't feel like a cheap thrash).
And finally: I've noticed lately that Malcolm McDowell's presence automatically makes a movie iconic....
