I don't understand the hubris regarding Sony's 'Marvel Universe'. Yes, the quality of her movies are from the 2000's when everything was just starting, but that doesn't make them bad. Verdict: people are simply jaded, in my opinion. 'Kraven the Hunter' does not boast a strong script, but offers an interesting story about a super-human trying to find his place in life. At the center of the story are morally broken people, be it the outwardly powerful Sergei Kravinov, his brother Dmitry, their abusive father Nikolai and his rival Alexei. Each of them thirsts for self-assertion, and the ways for this are bloody. Each of them is a monster, even the protagonist, for why then Sergei hunts people? The protagonist is not driven by justice, but by his father's instilled role as a hunter. A dark shadow in the story is the mentioned Dr. Warren, aka Jackal from Marvel Comics, that gave Alexei Sitzevich the power of Rhino. This is probably a set up for a future 'Neogenic Nightmare', which will appear in this movie universe at any rate. 'Kraven the Hunter' is a tragic tale of self determination and the path chosen to do so. Aaron Taylor Johnson, who I first saw in 'Kick-Ass', has turned into a mighty handsome man, Russell Crowe as Nikolai Kravinoff is unrecognizable, and Fred Heckinger, who I saw in 'Gladiator 2', is charming here as the battered Dmitri, who will still reveal himself to the world as Chameleon. The merit of Sony's 'Spider-Man Universe' is that it greatly expands the Marvel world by putting its secondary characters in major roles. Hopefully, the next hero of this universe will be Curt Connors, aka The Lizard, followed by the 'Neogenic Nightmare' mini-series with the appearance and transformation of Spider-Man into a monster that The Lizard will have to subdue and protect from public anger, led by J. Jonah Jameson, followed by the appearance of a mutated Dr. Octopus and a massive crossover. As they say, the 'Sinister Six'. As they say, we'll see.
